To Get Their Businesses Cooking, Many Food Start-ups increasingly turn to their home kitchens
England, UK, Mar 27, 2015 — The food and drink start-up scene is increasingly seeing food businesses often started by those giving up corporate careers opting to start from home. This is the case for Emma Hudson who swapped a career in Engineering for a catering business Benons’s Catering, a niche corporate catering business based in the North West.
Spending time with the ‘little ones’ while doing what they love and working from home is seen as the lure many say rather than the prospect of a huge bumper pay. “My Original idea was to set up a brick and mortar bakery” Emma, who has 2 little boys the youngest only two, says. That would however have meant that she spent more time in the bakery away from the little ones.
So it soon donned on her that starting her company from home was the most logical route. The current start up scene in the U.K. thankfully is skewed towards helping start-ups like Emma’s come into being and grow. Being based in Oldham meant Emma had the support of the existing start-up network including the Business Growth Hub for help and advice if and when she needed it.
There are increasing success stories in the food and drink sector across the U.K. that share this experience with ‘mumpreneurs’ big in numbers. The start-up costs of setting up a commercial kitchen had for a long time stood in Emma’s way to pursuing a dream in catering. Her busy schedule as an Engineering Designer in a major design firm in Manchester also meant she didn’t have the flexibility needed to run a commercial kitchen.
Emma had talked about starting a food business for many years, but it was ultimately the birth of her second child in November 2013 that gave her the urge to get started. “It was imperative that I had enough time at home looking after my two little ones,” Emma says
