Fenstanton, UK, February 08, 2010 -- Solar Power in England has seemed for many years to be a frivolous idea mainly due to the fact the UK doesn’t enjoy the warmest or sunniest of climates. Not anymore, thanks to the development of a third generation of Solar Power Panels – OPV (Organic Photovoltaics).
Using OPV with Tensile Membrane Structures self financing building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) are now a reality.
Any new or existing building can benefit from this advance in technology. The OPV panels can not only be fixed to a standard building but because of their flexible nature can also be incorporated in Tensile Membrane structures.
During 2008 a technology partnership was established between Skyshades International and Konarka. Since that time, SKYShades and its wholly-owned membrane fabrication subsidiary Tensile Structures International (TSI) based in Colombo, Sri Lanka have been perfecting the various ways in which Konarka’s Power Plastic® can be bonded or sleeved into SKYShades’ range of Tension Fabric products including PTFE, PVC and similar composite materials to allow the conversion of solar energy into “clean green electricity.”
The OPV cells which Konarka produces are lightweight, flexible and highly versatile and can now be manufactured inexpensively at high speed using coating and printing technologies.
Konarka’s Power Plastic® collects energy at up to 70° off-axis from nearly sunrise to sunset from any light, not just solar, unlike conventional solar panels which are most effective between 10am and 3pm assuming there is no cloud cover.
Konarka’s Power Plastic® takes light in and delivers power out. This technological breakthrough has coincided with a much improved production process which allows Konarka’s photo-reactive materials to be printed or coated inexpensively onto flexible substrates using roll-to-roll manufacturing.
Inside2Outside Ltd, market leaders in the design and manufacture of canopies and shelters who for many years, have been looking for ways to harness the power of the sun using their membranes, have teamed up with SKYShades International, and Konarka to create SKYShades UK Ltd to be able to provide the advanced technology in this country with electricity producing tensile membrane structures.
The Sun’s rays, captured by the OPV and an insulation gap created when the OPV is installed on the roof, means that under the roof temperatures can be up to 13°C warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer, thus reducing air-conditioning requirements.
With the Government introducing FIT’s (Feed-In Tariff’s) in April 2010, a financial incentive to encourage the development of micro generation facilities, now is the time to bring effective Solar Power to the UK. SKYShades is going to do this and is therefore revolutionising the Solar Power Industry in the UK.
Skyshades UK are launching this new technology at the EcoBuild Exhibition in Earls Court 2nd to 4th March Stand number 308. See www.skyshades.co.uk for details on how to get a free pass to the exhibition.
