“Anecdotal Evidence” – the new and in Germany, the debut album by the New York jazz pianist Axel Schwintzer – certainly qualifies as tangible evidence of the accuracy of those eulogies that were sung on the bandleader Schwintzer.
Its extremely exciting original compositions as well as his well-rehearsed and musically exciting band Axel’s axiom convince at the highest level.
Don‘t believe everything you hear. Musicians are particularly prone to be surrounded by stories and lore that are at best half true. However, anec- dotal evidence – the latest album by pianist Axel Schwintzer – may be considered solid evidence that the praise his previous album had garnered was indeed justified.
The title of his new album – anecdotal evidence – therefore seems fitting. The music contains ample proof of his skills as a musical story teller. Even though he asserts that tune titles like “Doppel- gänger” or “Above & Beyond” have no biographical background: From the gospel infused introduction to “Virtuous Cycle”, via the Reggae interlude in “Al- ter Ego”, and to the contemplative “Silver Lining”, the melodies and rhythms create suspenseful arcs that tell manifold anecdotes about the world. And as a listener, one feels compelled to agree and say “yes, I’ve seen, heard, or felt this before too!”
As it were, anecdotal evidence serves as, well, evidence of stories like this, but the listener who is looking for hard facts only is bound to miss the best part: A remarkable and diverse brand of mu- sic, with striking personal contributions from all members – and a unique band sound that has the potential to stay in your ear for a long time.
